FAQ- General Information

What kind of hardware and software do you use?

We use only top-of-the-line Intel servers, custom-built and extensively tested. Our hardware is chosen specifically for its reliability and interoperability with FreeBSD and Ubuntu.

We are currently running the fully-updated and patched FreeBSD and Ubuntu operating systems. Our FreeBSD and Ubuntu builds have thousands of custom software packages installed, and the operating systems are hardened for security and tuned for performance. We use Apache for Web service and NcFTPd for FTP access.

We continuously upgrade our servers as more powerful equipment becomes available. Your website will always be hosted on state-of-the-art equipment with plenty of room for growth.

What kind of network connectivity do you have?

We own and operate our own data centers and dedicated multi-homed network. Currently, we connect to three separate backbones through multiple 10 Gbps circuits. We hand-tune our BGP routing decisions to ensure optimum paths to every destination network on the internet. We use best-of-breed carrier-class networking hardware from Cisco Systems, Juniper Networks, Foundry Networks, and Extreme Networks. More details on our network and data centers are available.

You don't colocate your equipment elsewhere?

Correct. We have managed our own equipment, data centers, and network since the fall of 1995. Our experience ensures the best possible results for our clients without dependence on any single third party.

How long have you been in business?

pair Networks was first organized in August 1995. We brought our first customers online on January 11, 1996. Our initial office was 700 square feet and powered by a full T-1 through Digex. We have undergone tremendous growth since that day.

How can I be sure you'll be around six months from now?

pair Networks has a solid business plan and a vision for the next ten years of operation at all times. Our strong international customer base, successful reseller programs, and diversified services help ensure that we will be going strong indefinitely into the future.

The company has been profitable since February 1996, and those profits are continually reinvested in the business. We do not have any outside investors, equity financing, nor long-term debt. Dozens of acquisition overtures have been politely declined in the past several years. We are in business for the long-term, not a quick buck. Moreover, we have seen what sometimes happens to customers after a company is acquired.

What if there is a major power outage or natural disaster?

pair Networks is well-equipped to handle such major events. Our facilities are built to survive outages, and we are geographically and physically protected from most natural disasters. We are located in Pittsburgh, which is earthquake-free (unlike California), hurricane-safe (unlike Florida), and has successfully deregulated power (unlike California). We are also located above any historical flood lines. We also have an internal plan for recovery from a complete disaster.

Can I visit some of the sites you already host?

Certainly. Every Monday, we select a Site of the Week from our customer base and feature that site as an example of the quality of our hosting service. Previously chosen sites are listed as well. These sites can be found on our Customer Site of the Week page.

What happens if I am dissatisfied with your services?

We will always strive to meet your needs. Please be sure to contact us regarding any problems you encounter. If you choose to leave, however, we offer a money-back guarantee for the first one hundred days of service. This includes all setup fees that have been paid to us (excluding domain name registration fees which are nonrefundable for reasons beyond our control). We will provide you with an exit survey which helps us determine how we can better meet the needs of our customers.

If you choose to cancel or otherwise reduce your service with us at any other time, a pro-rated refund is issued based on any prepaid time that was unused, effective at the end of the calendar month in which the notice is received. Please see the money back guarantee policy for any applicable exceptions.
