For example, you may reject an email from a certain address or with a certain word in the subject line. Rejecting certain subjects is typically used as a way to keep spam from making it into your account.

You can set up a rejected subject rule ahead of time. If you were, for example, to set up a rule to block all messages that have “cat” in the subject, any message that had the word “cat” would be marked as junk. Your mailbox will then deal with the junk based on the mailbox’s settings.

However, rejected addresses and subjects operate by using the string version of a word, not the word itself. So if a word in the subject line or address contains the rejected string, it will also be rejected. To follow the earlier example, if the subject was “Catch you later,” the email would be marked as spam because the string “cat” appears in “catch.”

So be sure to carefully choose your rejected addresses and subjects, so you don’t accidentally mark valid emails as junk.

Using Wildcards in Rejected Subjects

You can use wildcards to create rules that match variations of a subject:

An asterisk (
*
) matches zero or more characters.

A question mark (
?
) matches exactly one character.

Examples:

Matches subjects that begin with “Sale,” including “Sale,” “Sales,” and “Sale ends today”

Sale*

Matches “Order 5 confirmed,” but not “Order 55 confirmed”

Order ? Confirmed

Use wildcards carefully to avoid marking valid messages as junk.

How do I Reject Subjects in the ACC?

You can set up rejection rules directly on your mailboxes in the Account Control Center (ACC).

Choose the tutorial that reflects your ACC interface type:

Legacy Interface

New ACC Interface

Not sure what the difference is?
