We've put together some common causes of broken links and how it can be fixed. See the sections for troubleshooting help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check Your URL<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 404 error means that a web page was not found at URL you just used. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hese are often caused by broken links. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you get a 404, check the URL to see if there are any glaring errors. <\/span><a name=\"typo\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typos<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misspellings can happen to anyone. Check your URL and make sure everything is spelled correctly<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure to double check slashes and periods. These will easily slip under the radar and cause problems.<\/span><a name=\"rel&amp;abs\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relative vs. Absolute Links<a name=\"absolute\"><\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are Absolute Links?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Absolute Link Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">&nbsp;https:\/\/www.example.com\/page.html<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This probably looks familiar to you. Absolute links are complete URLs. It includes all of the file path. They are usually used to link to another website. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A file path is a route that the browser follows to find your website files. URLs are file path indicators for your browser. It tells the browser to go into certain folders to find specific site files. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">page.html<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">folder1<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which in turn is in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">directory2<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the file path should be <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">directory2\/folder1\/page.html<span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pair.com\/support\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/FOlder-relationship-3.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"288\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pair.com\/support\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/FOlder-relationship-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1976\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pair.com\/support\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/FOlder-relationship-3.png 288w, https:\/\/www.pair.com\/support\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/FOlder-relationship-3-60x45.png 60w, https:\/\/www.pair.com\/support\/kb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/FOlder-relationship-3-150x112.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-messages hts-messages--info   hts-messages--withicon \"   >\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\t<p>\r\n    \t\t\t\t\tThe outermost folder will be listed first. Followed by the second outermost folder, etc.    \t\t\t\t<\/p>\r\n    \t\t\t    \t\t\t\r\n    \t\t<\/div><!-- \/.ht-shortcodes-messages -->\r\n    \t\t\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When creating links in code, whether you are linking to another page or adding an image link, you can use an absolute link to be sure of the file path.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a name=\"relative\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are Relative Links?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Relative Link Example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">\/page.html<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, relative links are abbreviated absolute links. Instead of writing the entire file path out, a relative link <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assumes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the file path. They are usually used to link within a website. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If both <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">page.html <\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home.html <\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">folder1<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then a relative link from <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">page.html<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home.html<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would look like this: <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/home.html<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A relative link will replace the last file name with a new one. In the case of the example above, the new file name would be <\/span><span style=\"font-family: monospace;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home.html<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cases where files are not in the same folder, you can write a relative link that moves folders, as well. If not, the browser will end up searching for the file in the wrong folder, thus resulting in a broken link. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You also cannot use relative links to link to another site. An absolute URL must be used.
