The first step is to check your database status to identify whether or not your database needs to be optimized. After that, there is a list of things that will slow down your MySQL database and how you can fix them.<\/p>\n<h3>Check Your Database Status<\/h3>\n<p>If you want to see how your database is running, follow these steps to see your database status. It will tell you the processes that are running and how long it takes them to execute. You will be able to narrow down processes that need to be optimized here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Why Is MySQL Slow?<\/h3>\n<p><a name=\"2.1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>MySQL can be slowed down by a variety of things. See the common problems below to identify what might be affecting your database's run speed and how you can fix it.<\/p>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">You don't have an index<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An index is a type of database table that compiles information in an easily searchable way. Since the searching is easier, the queries will complete faster, thus speeding up your database. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it happening to me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check your database and see if you have an index table. If you don\u2019t have one, this may be the reason you database is sluggish. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to fix<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To fix this, you simply have to add an index to your MySQL code. Check out MySQL\u2019s article on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.mysql.com\/doc\/refman\/5.7\/en\/create-index.html\"><b>CREATE INDEX Syntax<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more information on index creation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n<p><a name=\"2.2\"><\/a><\/p>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">You have complex queries<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a query is too complicated and the code is not optimized, it will use more CPU. If the queries are causing the database to hit the upper limits of its allotted CPU, the database will become slow. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it happening to me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check your <\/span><a href=\"#1\"><b>database status<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If there are queries with long run times, this may be the problem. Look for elements like \u201ctable cache\u201d and \u201cquery cache,\u201d since these can cause the queries\u2019 CPU usage to escalate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to fix<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspect your code for optimizations. If you can find a way to rewrite the code for more efficient CPU usage, the database will speed up. If this isn\u2019t possible, you may want to consider upgrading to a dedicated<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0server for more CPU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n<p><a name=\"2.3\"><\/a><\/p>\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">Persistent connections are on<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a database is queried, a link is established. When persistent connections is on, links remain after the script has finished execution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a new link needs to be established, PHP will check for a persistent connection that matches the new link. If one does, it will use the preexisting link. If it can\u2019t find an identical link, the script will create a new one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may seem efficient, but it can actually severely slow down your database. Persistent connections often create multiple links per person and save them in case they ever try to access the database again. When it does this for every visitor, it can begin to weigh heavily on database performance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it happening to me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know you have persistent connections set up, this may be slowing down your database.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to fix<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disable persistent connections, unless you know your code is dependent on them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this is the problem, your database will speed up after persistent connections has been disabled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2.4\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n    \t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/ht-toggle-content -->\r\n    \t\t<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\n    \t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle  \"  >\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__title\">Your databases are experiencing high usage<\/div>\r\n    \t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__content\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t<div class=\"hts-toggle__contentwrap\">\r\n    \t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your database is being used in high volumes, this can slow the database down. When there are too many queries to process at once, the CPU will bottleneck, resulting in a slow database.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it happening to me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are aware that traffic to your website has increased, this may have caused your database slow-down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How to fix<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way to speed up the database is to make the code more efficient. Processing power can only stretch so far.
