New Features for WordPress Hosting

We're constantly improving our offerings and listening to customer feedback. In the past month, we've added the following features:

Account Type Changes in the Account Control Center

Customers on any WP Enthusiast or WP Professional account will now be able to use the ACC to change their account type to any other WP Enthusiast or WP Professional package. Going from one Enthusiast package to another can happen automatically, as long as you aren't using too many sites -- in this case you'll get a warning. WP Professional account changes that are requested through the ACC will be processed by our Support team, who will get your new VPS up and running for you.

Remember, we want you to feel free to grow or change your account type as needs changed. There are no penalties for switching account types!

SFTP Access for WP Enthusiast Accounts

WordPress developers who use our services requested that we allow SFTP access for WP Enthusiast accounts. For some, this is the preferred and most comfortable way of working.

Feedback

How are you enjoying the new WordPress hosting accounts? Are there any changes you'd like to see, or features you're missing? Let us know!

Tutorial: Joomla Best Practices

Joomla is a widely popular content management system, used by many top rated websites. Like any content management system, it is highly targeted for abuse. An out of the box installation of Joomla contains only the most basic of settings. Based on the server environment, settings can vary. Here are the security best practices for a pair Networks environment:

Upon installation, immediately change the default "admin" username:

  1. Log in to the Joomla backend
  2. Select "User Manager"
  3. Select "Admin" from the user record
  4. Enter a username, preferably using a mix of numbers and letters
  5. Click "Save"

Use a strong password for the administrator backed, using the following general guidelines:

  • At least 8 characters long
  • Contains uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Not used on any other site
  • Does not contain dictionary words
  • Does not contain special dates or private data (e.g. birthdate, address)
  • Does not use sequences (e.g. "asdf", "1234")

Add the following line to your .htaccess file:

<FilesMatch "\.(htaccess|htpasswd|ini|phps|log|sh|conf)$">
Order allow,deny
Deny from all
</FilesMatch>

Review the list of vulnerable extensions before installing anything from a third party:

https://docs.joomla.org/Vulnerable_Extensions_List

If an extension has not been updated or maintained within a six month period, don't use it.

Make a backup any time changes are made. This can be done with the pair Networks Account Control Center or through the Joomla backend.

Be careful with file permissions! Never manually change a folder or file to 777 permissions, for example.

For an additional layer of security, add .htaccess password protection to the administrator folder.
