Beginning on October 21, 2008, we have been making upgrades to the e-mail system on all shared user servers (and dedicated servers, by request). The following two changes are being made.

1. New, More Efficient IMAP and POP Mail Server

   The Dovecot mail system will replace the existing programs that allow mail to be retrieved via IMAP and POP (all external e-mail reading programs use one of those two protocols). This upgrade will provide improved performance for customers reading their mail via our webmail, or with their own e-mail reading program.

   Most customers will not need to change anything at all with their configuration. However, some new features Dovecot provides may be incompatible with some existing configurations. These situations are noted below.

   Important notes about this change:

   • Mailbox maximum size quotas, configured by account holders in the Account Control Center, will now apply to IMAP folders as well as the mailbox's inbox. In some cases, this may cause mailboxes to be over quota, when they were not previously.

     To prevent mail from unexpectedly bouncing, we will remove any such quota at the time the upgrade is made. However, we recommend that you delete all unwanted e-mail from your additional mailboxes, and raise any mailbox quotas as necessary.

     Customers with mailboxes in this situation will be notified via e-mail before the upgrade takes place.

   • Dovecot maintains index files, to speed up e-mail access. Unfortunately, this means that it will no longer be possible to access e-mail via IMAP or POP, if the mailbox files are being modified automatically in certain ways by programs running on the user servers. This should not affect many customers, and if you have not specifically added any custom programs to process your e-mail on the server, it does not apply to you.

     In general, the use of filter programs such as procmail which modify incoming e-mail before it is added to the mailbox are compatible with Dovecot. The use of terminal-based e-mail reading programs such as pine or elm is also supported.

     If you do use other programs to modify mailbox files in-place on your user server, please refer to the Dovecot documentation for more information about this issue: http://wiki.dovecot.org/MboxProblems.

   • Our previous software supported a feature which allowed the use of the /usr/home/USERNAME/mbox file instead of /var/mail/USERNAME when reading mail via IMAP or Webmail. Dovecot does not support this feature. If you have setup your main account mailbox to use this feature on your hosting account, please contact support@pair.com.

   • (added 11/13/2008) - Some mail readers may prompt you to download mail you have previously downloaded, when using POP, after the upgrade. This should be a one-time occurrence.

   • (added 11/13/2008) - Previously, it was possible to use the account username in conjunction with a virtual domain name in order to reach the main account mailbox. With Dovecot, to reach your main account mailbox, you should instead use your account server's name (for example, gamma.pair.com) as the mail server in your e-mail program, or use a username like username@gamma.pair.com when logging in via webmail.

     Please contact our Support Department if you need us to migrate your webmail preferences over to the username@gamma.pair.com style login.

   • (added 11/13/2008) - Some users of Eudora who have upgraded through several versions of that software may receive an error when using POP to retrieve mail about the "LAST" command failing. "LAST" was removed from the POP specification many years ago, and Eudora does not normally use it. However, when Eudora has been upgraded from older versions, it can still have a configuration file specifiying that "LAST" be used.

     You can resolve the issue by opening Eudora's "eudora.ini" file in a text editor like Notepad and finding the line "UsePOPLast=1" -- change the 1 to a 0 (zero) and save the file. The file is located in the same directory Eudora is installed in.

   • (added 11/13/2008) - Some users of Eudora have reported a problem using POP to retrieve mail when SSL is enabled. Please contact our Support Department with details of your setup if you have this issue.

   • (added 12/8/2008) - Dovecot treats usernames in a case-sensitive fashion. Please be sure you are using all lowercase characters in the username field of your e-mail program.

2. Change To Remove Junk E-mail Filtering Bypass

   We will also be configuring the shared user servers to only accept incoming mail connections to address (hostname or IP address) of the server itself. This prevents a common trick by senders of junk e-mail, in which they ignore the listed mail server for a domain and connect to the IP of the domain itself, in the process bypassing our own mail filtering servers, or any third-party services a user might be using.

   (In the case of our own mail filtering, the shared user server would reroute the mail to the filtering server, but in the process, greylisting protection is lost.)

   The name of the server your account is located on may be found in the right-hand column when you are logged in to the Account Control Center.

   NOTE: Mail server records that point to a pair mail filtering server (mailwashX.pair.com), whether setup automatically by our system or custom by the account holder, are fine, and do not need to be updated for this change.

   Important notes about this change:

   • If you are using a third-party mail filtering service, make sure that they are forwarding your mail to the account server here (example: gamma.pair.com) instead of to your domain name directly.

   • If you have manually changed your mail server record to point to your own domain name, it will need to be modified to make sure it's pointed to the IP address of your server. Contact us at support@pair.com if you are unsure how to do this.

All shared servers have been upgraded as of 12/18/2008.
