The Basics - Our File Directory Structure

Your pair Networks' account possesses serveral different directories organized in a particular structure. This Knowledge Base Support article offers a description of these directories and how they are organized. In all the examples below, unless otherwise specified, replace "USERNAME" with your pair Networks username.

Many of the directories described in this article can be accessed via the Account Control Center's File Management section (https://my.pair.com/).

Home Directory

The Home directory is the starting point for your account on a pair Networks server. The path to the Home directory is /usr/home/USERNAME.

This directory is where FTP, SSH programs, and the Account Control Center (ACC) File Manager will start you. When you log into your account, you will be in your Home directory. From your Home directory, you may see the following directories:

• backup
• log_config
• public_ftp
• public_html
• www_logs
• public_ssl
• boxes

Descriptions of these directories are as follows:

Backup Directory (backup)

This directory uses the path /usr/home/USERNAME/backup. This directory contains any backups that are generated through the Account Control Center such as MySQL database backups or Web site backups done through the archive manager.

Web Report Configuration Directory (log_config)

This optional directory contains the configuration files for your account if you are using Webalizer or Analog, the Web statistics packages provided for free by pair Networks. The path is /usr/home/USERNAME/log_config. If you do not have Webalizer or Analog set up, you will not see this directory.

Web Log Directory (www_logs)

This directory contains the logs of the traffic to your Web site. Its path is /usr/home/USERNAME/www_logs.

Public HTML Directory (public_html)

This directory is actually a symbolic link (symlink) to your Web directory, which is where the files you want to be publically viewable on the Internet should live. The path is /usr/home/USERNAME/public_html. A further description of your Web directory is provided below.

Public SSL Directory (public_ssl)

This optional directory is also a symbolic link to your Web directory but which uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer) to transfer files to your Web directory. Its path is /usr/home/USERNAME/public_ssl. If you do not have the SSL add-on with your account, you will not see this directory.

Public FTP Directory (public_ftp)

This optional directory is a symbolic link to /usr/public_ftp/USERNAME, which contains your anonymous FTP area. Virtual FTP must be enabled via the ACC on one or more of your domain names to see and use this directory.

Mailboxes (boxes)

For QS, VQS, and accounts created prior to June 1, 2011, we include a symbolic link in your Home directory called "boxes" that points to /usr/boxes/USERNAME. This directory is where all the e-mail for your virtual mailboxes is stored.

Accounts created after June 1, 2011 must access all e-mail using IMAP or POP, and do not have direct file access to mailbox files.

The Web Directory

The Web directory contains any files that the user wants to make available online. All domain names in your account will be mapped to a directory, or subdirectory, under this main Web directory. The Web directory's path is /usr/www/users/USERNAME.

SSL Web Directory

This directory contains any Web files that you want to have available through an SSL connection. This directory will only be visible and available for your account if you have the SSL add-on option enabled.

The path to this directory is /usr/wwws/users/USERNAME.

E-Mail Directories

The Inboxes for any of your pair Networks mailboxes use this path: /usr/boxes/main_USERNAME/domain/mailbox_USERNAME

Replace "main_USERNAME" with your pair Networks' username, "domain" with your full domain name and extension (example.com), and "mailbox_USERNAME" with the username for the mailbox in question.

The IMAP folder files are located under: /usr/boxes/main_USERNAME/domain/mailbox_USERNAME^/.imap/

The files are named the same as the folders. When attempting to access your IMAP folder files using this path, be sure to include the caret symbol ("^") after your "mailbox_USERNAME."

If you are using the Qmail program, the system generated files can be found at /var/rules/USERNAME.
