Frequently Asked Questions - Electronic Mail
Every account on our shared servers has one main mailbox. Unless you specify alternate delivery settings, that mailbox receives e-mail at the address "username@pair.com". The username is chosen when you are signing up, and cannot be changed. Any domain name that is attached to your account will allow any e-mail addressed to that domain name to reach your main account mailbox (i.e. username@pair.com). For example, "anything@example.com" will reach your main account mailbox.
You also have the ability to modify your settings to discard, store, or forward e-mail messages sent to e-mail addresses that you did not create (e.g. anything@example.com). You can change these settings through the My pair Account Control Center's E-Mail Management section. From the E-Mail Overview page, click the Global E-Mail Delivery Settings link and modify the settings to your liking. To help eliminate junk e-mail from flooding your username@pair.com mailbox, select the Discard E-Mail option from the Global E-Mail Delivery Settings page.
You may use the features of My pair Account Control Center to setup additional mailboxes, forwarding, autoresponders, and other features to handle your incoming mail.
Any mailbox on our servers is remotely accessible with any POP3 or IMAP client such as Netscape, Outlook, Eudora, Pegasus, or others. Also, the main account mailbox, "username@pair.com", may be accessed from the Unix command line, using pine, elm, or mutt. You can also access your mailboxes through the Web by using Webmail.pair.com. Please note that our IMAP implementation does not support simultaneous access to a single mailbox by multiple users.
Through My pair Account Control Center you may configure any of the following :
- Automatic forwarding
- Automatic replies to incoming mails (autoresponder)
- Saving out incoming mails to a specified file in your account
- Discarding incoming mails addressed to specific recipients
- Processing mail through a custom handler program such as procmail
You do not have to wait for pair Networks staff to assist you with these functions; they are under your control at all times.
A recipe is a rule that describes how a particular e-mail address should handle incoming e-mail messages. You can apply a single recipe or multiple recipes to any mailbox on your account. Recipes include Forward, File, Filter, Autorespond, Discard, and Bounce. For more detailed information on mailbox recipes, go to the E-Mail Forwarding, Autoresponders, and Advanced Configurations page.
You may configure those mailboxes through My pair Account Control Center. Each mailbox may receive e-mail addressed to a specific address in a domain name hosted on your account, or all e-mail addressed to that domain name. Please note that if you elect to use our services without a domain name, these mailboxes are unavailable to you; at least one domain name is required.
These mailboxes are available in addition to the main mailbox which is included with every account.

Whenever possible, you should continue to use the SMTP server provided to you by your dialup ISP. However, if that server is unavailable to you, or restricts the sender field you are allowed to specify, you may use our relay server. A valid POP3 or IMAP access is required within 15 minutes before the sending of any e-mail through our relay. Further details are available in our Support Resources.
