pairVPS General Questions
What is pairVPS?
pairVPS is pair Networks' fully-managed virtual private server offering. When you sign up for this service, you gain access to you own mini-dedicated server, which means that you can add software and have more administrative control because you will be the only customer on your virtual private server.
Really, the only difference between our pairVPS virtual private server and QuickServe® dedicated server offerings is that with pairVPS, you have access to only a portion of the servers resources such as the RAM, CPU, bandwidth, and disk space.
What does "fully managed" mean?
Fully managed means that we monitor and maintain your pairVPS Web server 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We update core server software and replace failed hardware no matter what time of the day it is.
Unlike other virtual private server providers, we offer you 24/7/365 real-time technical support via the telephone or e-mail. This service includes, at no extra cost, on-site and off-site back-ups as well as a host of pre-installed software.
Bottom line: We take care of the server and let you concentrate on your Web sites.
Do I get technical support with my virtual private server?
Yes, you do. Because our pairVPS offering is fully managed, you have real-time access to technical support by telephone or e-mail 24/7/365.
What does VQS mean?
VQS stands for Virtual QuickServe. QuickServe is the brand name of our fully dedicated server offering. When you sign up for a pairVPS account, you are basically signing up for a mini-QuickServe dedicated server. We offer three pairVPS levels: VQS-1, VQS-2, and VQS-3.
The differences between these levels are the resources you get with each one such as RAM, bandwidth, and disk space.
Can I add more resources to my virtual private server?
You cannot add more resources to your virtual private server, but you can upgrade to a higher level pairVPS account or upgrade to a fully managed QuickServe dedicated server.
Technical Questions
Do I get root access with my virtual private server?
Because pairVPS is a fully-managed service, root access is not included with pairVPS virtual private servers. However, you do have access to many administrative functions via our Account Control Center (
https://my.pair.com). These features include:
- Restart Apache
- Restart MySQL
- Virtual Private Server Reboot
- Manage Firewall Rules
- Force Account Update
Can I install software on my virtual private server?
Yes, you may install software on your virtual private server, just as you can with a QuickServe dedicated server. Please contact us if you have questions about the types of software that you can install.
At no extra charge, we also have already installed many popular software
applications on your virtual private server such as Ruby on Rails, Phusion
Passenger (mod_rails), mod_fastcgi, mod_perl, MySQL, PHP as an Apache
module, Python, C, C++, Ruby, Parrot, Pugs, and more. All you have to do
is tell us to enable them if you want to use these applications.
And for a nominal one-time fee, we can install other common software applications.
How are databases handled with pairVPS?
You can create databases on your virtual private server account via the Account Control Center (
https://my.pair.com/). These databases will live on your virtual private server.
Do pairVPS servers run the same software as your QuickServe dedicated servers?
Yes, our pairVPS servers run the FreeBSD operating system and run Apache, as do all of our Web servers.
